Description
Cabaret #4 Poster by Miles Aldridge
Enter the bold and cinematic world of Miles Aldridge, the British photographer celebrated for his use of pop art aesthetics, saturated colors, and dark humor. His works often resemble film stills, fragments of larger narratives, where dazzlingly styled scenes are infused with psychological tension that challenges social norms.
Rising to fame in the mid-1990s, Aldridge built an international reputation with his meticulously composed photographs referencing film noir, art history, and pop culture. A master colorist, he creates striking mise-en-scènes in sharp, vibrant tones. Beneath the glamorous and often eroticized surfaces, however, lie unsettling truths that expose the myth of domestic perfection. With over 25 years of professional work, Aldridge is today one of the few contemporary photographers still primarily shooting on film.
This motif, Woman Blowing Smoke, comes from his largest retrospective, Virgin Mary. Supermarkets. Popcorn. Photographs 1999–2020, exhibited at Fotografiska Stockholm. The show featured over 120 works, including collaborations such as (after Cattelan) with artist Maurizio Cattelan. The photograph depicts a woman lying on her back, blowing smoke from her mouth, a visually seductive yet psychologically charged image that reflects Aldridge’s signature style.
