Gilleam Trapenberg (b. 1991) is a visual artist born and raised in Curaçao, now based in Amsterdam. His work often reflects on the social landscape of his homeland, uncovering its many paradoxes and challenging the dominant depictions of Caribbean life in Western media. Through his photography, he creates counter-narratives that explore identity, culture, and representation.
In his series New Suns, Trapenberg transforms the familiar Caribbean sunset, an image long reduced to a glossy travel-brochure cliché, into something deeper and more personal. What began as chance encounters with sunsets evolved into a nearly scientific study of color, reshaping a dominant visual symbol into a layered meditation on meaning and perception.
As part of Space - A Visual Journey, this work joins 13 internationally acclaimed photographers in exploring humanity’s eternal fascination with the cosmos, our urge to push boundaries, and the timeless questions of who we are and where we belong in the vast universe.
