Description
War is Hell Poster by Horst Faas
The German photojournalist Horst Faas became world-renowned for his powerful and uncompromising images from the Vietnam War. Among his most iconic works is War is Hell, taken on June 18, 1965, showing a young American soldier with the words “War is Hell” scrawled on his helmet.
For years, the soldier in the image remained unidentified, but he was later revealed as Larry Wayne Chaffin, a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. The photograph has since become one of the most enduring symbols of the Vietnam War, encapsulating both the brutality of conflict and the humanity of those caught within it.
This poster was part of the exhibition News Flash - A Century of News at Fotografiska Stockholm, which highlights striking moments from the vast photo archive of the Swedish news agency TT, spanning from 1921 to the present day.
