Description

Self portrait Poster by László Moholy-Nagy / Lucia Moholy

Discover a rare and intimate portrayal of László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), the Bauhaus pioneer celebrated for his groundbreaking experiments in painting, sculpture, design, and photography.

Although this photograph was actually taken by his wife Lucia Moholy in the mid-1920s, it comes as close to a self-portrait as Moholy-Nagy himself would likely have allowed. Standing at a conventional portrait distance, he raises his hand to partially obscure his face, the blurred image of his palm disrupting the standard conventions of portrait photography.

The result is more than a likeness: it is a striking reflection of both Moholy-Nagy as a person and his radical aesthetic originality. Presented in the exhibition Light Play at Fotografiska Stockholm (2023), the work exemplifies the modernist vision of breaking norms to create new forms of expression.
