Description

Copșa Mică, Romania, 1990 Poster by James Nachtwey

This poster features a powerful photograph by James Nachtwey depicting a traditional farming village transformed after the government installed a factory producing carbon for tire manufacturing. Due to a complete lack of environmental controls, heavy levels of airborne soot blanketed the village, turning buildings, land, and daily life black. One of the most influential photojournalists of the last half-century, Nachtwey is known for his uncompromising and humanistic visual language, shaped by decades of documenting conflict, social injustice, and their human consequences.

The motif is part of the exhibition Memoria at Fotografiska, which brings together key works from across Nachtwey’s career. Spanning from the early 1980s to the present day, the exhibition traces his sustained engagement with the effects of power, neglect, and systemic failure on communities and individuals.
