Visual artist Gilleam Trapenberg (b. 1991), born and raised in Curaçao and now based in Amsterdam, creates works that reflect on the social landscape of his homeland. His practice examines the paradoxes of the island while challenging stereotypical depictions of Caribbean life often seen in Western media, offering counter-images that highlight identity and cultural complexity.
In his series New Suns, Trapenberg reimagines the Caribbean sunset, an unavoidable symbol of the region in glossy travel brochures. What began as chance encounters with sunsets grew into an almost scientific color study, transforming a familiar cliché into a deeply personal and layered exploration of meaning and perception.
As part of Space - A Visual Journey, Trapenberg’s work joins 13 internationally acclaimed photographers in examining humanity’s fascination with the cosmos, our drive to expand boundaries, and the timeless questions of who we are and where we belong in the vast universe.
