Description

San Luis de la Reina, El salvador, 1984 Poster by James Nachtwey

This poster features a compelling photograph by James Nachtwey depicting wounded soldiers being carried to a village football field for helicopter evacuation, as three girls dressed for a saint’s day ceremony leave church to watch. One of the most influential photojournalists of the last half-century, Nachtwey is known for his uncompromising and humanistic visual language, shaped by decades of documenting war, conflict, and social upheaval.

The motif is part of the exhibition Memoria at Fotografiska, which brings together key works from across Nachtwey’s career. Spanning from the early 1980s to the present day, the exhibition traces his sustained engagement with the human consequences of conflict, where moments of violence and ritual, innocence and catastrophe, exist side by side.
