Description

Untitled (Tom & Tom Katt) 1987 Poster by Tom of Finland

Discover an intimate and rarely seen side of Tom of Finland, born Touko Laaksonen (1920–1999), one of the most influential queer artists of the 20th century. At a time when homosexuality was both criminalized and pathologized, Laaksonen worked discreetly under pseudonyms, creating art that would later transform him into a global icon.

In his modest home studio and private darkroom, he began capturing and developing portraits he called reference photos. To have them developed publicly would have risked imprisonment, making these images both courageous acts and essential parts of his artistic process.

The exhibition The Darkroom at Fotografiska Stockholm, marking the centenary of his birth, unveiled this previously hidden chapter of his creative journey, offering new insight into the foundations of his groundbreaking visual language.
